Next Nebraska commitment?
Nebraska has one linebacker in the 2012 recruiting class with Michael Rose from Kansas City (Mo.) Rockhurst, but it seems that they will be taking a second. One player that has emerged on the recruiting radar for Nebraska recently is Deion Jones from New Orleans (La.) Jesuit. "We had camp last Thursday through Sunday," Jones said. "We had Monday off, but we were back out there today. We were in helmets, shorts and shoulder pads and it's hot outside. It's good to get back out on the field though." Jones and his team were a bit of a success story last year. Jesuit was picked to finish dead last in their district, but the predictions didn't get the team down. In fact, they rallied around it. "We weren't supposed to make it out of districts and make the playoffs, but we won our district and went into the third round of the playoffs last year. I haven't seen any early predictions this year about our team." The next challenge for Jones and his team mates is to not rest on what they accomplished last year. They have to put it all together again this year regardless of being picked to finish last or first. "It's a group effort by all of the seniors to stay motivated. We all have different ways to do it. It starts with practice. Everyone has to give 100% on the field or in the weight room." While Jones prepares for his senior year he also ponders recruiting. He is holding 16 offers from teams including Nebraska, Kentucky, Kansas, Kansas State, Illinois, Pitt and Arizona among others. "I am looking for great coaches, a good defensive scheme, good program and a good team environment that is like a family. My parents are comfortable with me leaving home to go to school. They are willing to make that sacrifice." One of the teams that is standing out to Jones at this time is Nebraska. He said that he has stayed in good contact with the Nebraska coaching staff throughout the summer and talks to a number of coaches regularly. He said that his next contact with Nebraska was scheduled for tonight. "I talked with Coach Corey Raymond during the summer and then Coach Ross Els. I have a good relationship with both. We talk a lot. I actually get to speak with Coach Bo Pelini tonight and he will talk with my family." A talk with the head coach is something that Jones is really looking forward to and it spells good things for Nebraska and their chances with Jones. He said that the Huskers are high on his list of schools that he's considering at the moment. "Really high, they have me convinced that they are the team for me so far. They really seem like good people there. There are also players at Nebraska that are from local high schools around the area and that tells me that you can come from around here and adjust to there." While the talk with the head coach tonight is pending that hasn't stopped Jones from making additional plans with Nebraska. "I have set up an official visit for September 3rd. I have a game that Thursday and I will leave that Friday to get there for that weekend." Bryan Munson has worked with Big Red Report for nine years, covering recruiting and football.
