Enunwa didn't surprise teammates

Lincoln, NE - It wasn’t Jamal Turner or Brandon Kinnie stealing all the wide receiver headlines over the weekend. It wasn’t even media savvy Tim Marlowe. Saturday’s breakout performance belonged to sophomore Quincy Enunwa.

The Moreno Valley, California native had four receptions for 58 yards – often being Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez’s first look.

“Last year I didn't really have an opportunity like that. I just really wanted to take advantage of it,” said Enunwa, who only recorded one catch last season. “I just made sure that I really worked. I made sure to work on my hands and routes. I also worked on knowing the plays so no matter what they didn't have a choice to not put me on the field.”

Enunwa saw action in ten games last season, but was often behind Brandon Kinnie and Niles Paul. His playing time was limited and often situational. It was a tough time for the freshman, who had 15 touchdowns the year prior in high school. It’s why Saturday’s game was special for him.

“I was happy for him,” said senior wide receiver Brandon Kinnie. “I knew what Quincy could do. He’s a big physical guy.

“He’s been doing that all spring and ever since he got here. It’s why he didn’t red-shirt last year…He’s going to be a great player here.”

While it will remain to be seen if Enunwa remains one of Taylor Martinez’s top targets, he’s excited about the future with the fellow California native.

“We are part of the same class now because he red-shirted. We are just trying to make sure we have that togetherness for the net three years,” said Enunwa. “I think we meshed.”

As for his overall grade of the offense on Saturday?

“I would probably give it about a B, there were certain things we could have done better. Certain plans where we didn't go after the ball...or when he should have thrown, he ran (laughter),” said the sophomore. “I think we showed a pretty good amount of what we wanted to bring out.”
