Five Observations From the Weekend

Despite a loss to Penn State last week and off the court distractions throughout the weekend, the Nebraska volleyball team rebounded this weekend with two wins.

1.) Best fans in the country - Coming off a tough loss to the Penn State Nittany Lions, Husker fans were out in full force for both the Friday and Saturday games. And not just a loss after a week of being No. 1, but starting setter Lauren Cook was arrested and suspended for this weekends game. Nebraska fans were in full support for both Lauren Cook and Brigette Root, who started both games for the Huskers this weekend.

2. Two potential Big Ten Player of the Year Huskers? Before Lauren Cook was suspended she was also a candidate for this award. However, the two Huskers that have a very good shot at this award are Hannah Werth and Gina Mancuso. Hannah Werth is one of the most powerful and intimidating players in the Big Ten Conference this year. Werth was an All-American last year for the Huskers. Mancuso is probably the most consistent players for the Huskers this year. She might not have as much as power as Werth, but her consistent play and leadership, as well as outstanding statistics, makes me believe that she is one of the final candidates for this award.

3. A star in the making. It is hard to make this statement for a player that is a senior, but it is exactly what senior setter Brigette Root is. Root hadn't started a game for the Huskers this year until Friday night, and she made the most of it. Root had 35 assists against the Wolverines and 34 against the Spartans.

4. Nothing rattle's the Huskers. In the first game against Wolverines on Friday night, the Huskers were no match. Constantly out of position and not ready for the ball, many wondered if the Huskers were feeling the affects from the Penn State lost. However, Nebraska would fight back and win the next three sets to take the match 3-1. The Huskers carried the momentum from last night to sweep the Spartans Saturday night.

5. Big time players make big time plays. I took this phrase from Chicago Bulls announcer Stacey King because it is the best way to describe the play of the Huskers. The Big Three for the Huskers (Delano, Werth and Mancuso) have played consistently all season which is what they need to do for Husker post season success.

So after beating No. 23 Michigan and Michigan State this weekend, the Huskers (20-2) will take on Indiana(8-18, 0-14) in Bloomington later this week.
