Toney McCray is questionable for Friday night, but he says he's feeling better.

Lincoln, NE - Read the injury report from Monday night’s basketball exhibition and it would say – Toney McCray (toenail).

The senior had it removed last week after it was discovered the guard was suffering from an infection on his toe.

“They (teammates) kind of gave me a hard time, they didn’t really believe me at first. But once they saw my toenail – it looks nasty,” said McCray on Wednesday. “My feet have always given my problems, so I didn’t really know it was going on. Then I realized that it was just on top of my toe, so the doctor told me I should get it taken care of.”

McCray, who averaged 8.3 points and 4.7 rebounds last year, practiced for the first time yesterday. If he can put a solid practice together today, he could play tomorrow in the Huskers opening against South Dakota – but as of now he’s questionable.

“I’m feeling pretty good, I don’t expect any problems,” said the senior.

His head coach Doc Sadler is excited to get him back on the floor.

“Being a senior, the experience should make it easier for him this season,” said Sadler. “There will be less thinking and more playing. He’s one of our best perimeter shooters, so if he’s healthy he can add some points for you.”

McCray has constantly battled injuries over the years, ranging from foot problems to a Tommy Johns elbow surgery.

“Toney is a guy who I think could be a terrific defender, he’s long and can cause problems,” said Sadler. “The biggest thing for Toney is he needs to get in game shape…He’s never been able to put in a consistent amount of time in on the practice courts.”

News and Notes

On David Rivers….“We have to get David Rivers just on the perimeter, not two spots,” said Sadler. “He’s got to get in one spot and stay there. He has to learn before he can learn two.”

On Andre Almedia… “Seems to be getting better. He hasn’t done anything up and down work yet,” said Sadler. Verdict is still out on if they will try to redshirt him.

On possible redshirts Sadler says that at this point they are not planning on redshirting any freshman – saying he leaves it up to them in most cases.
