Coming off a tough loss in the Big Ten conference opener on Friday, the Nebraska baseball team bounced back in a big way, earning their first win as a part Big 10 conference, 18-5. The victory gives them a 16-9 mark on the season (1-1 in the Big Ten) and a chance to take the series tomorrow afternoon.

*Nebraska got all the runs they needed in the 2nd inning. They scored 11 times in the frame and nearly batted around twice. It was the first time the Huskers have scored double digits in an inning since exactly two years ago today – March 24th, 2010 against Northern Colorado.

Nebraska did a nice job taking advantage of opportunities. They were out-hit in the game 11-10, which means that they had to find other ways to score. One of the best examples of this came on a sacrifice fly… that plated two runs. The hustle and alert base running is a perfect example of what coach Erstad preaches to his team. The only home run on the day was a two-run shot by Chad Christensen in the 5th inning.

*Jon Keller had a rough outing to say the least. The sophomore had 59 pitches through the first two innings, and allowed three runs in that time frame. He didn’t look sharp at all, walking three and working deep into the count on more than one occasion.

However, after Keller exited the game following the 4th inning, Husker pitchers proceeded to shut out Illinois the rest of the way, with Kyle Kubat, Tyler Niederklein and Aaron Bummer all getting work. The freshman Kubat was especially impressive, going three innings while only allowing one hit and earning the win to improve his record to 2-0.

Other notes

*Illinois was the first team to score a run in the 4th inning against the Huskers all season. The single run in that inning for the Illini was the last they would score in the game.

*This was the first time Illinois has lost a game this season when scoring first. They had a 3-0 lead on Nebraska before the Huskers exploded for the 11 runs in the 2nd inning.

*Nebraska and Illinois will wrap up the series Sunday at 1:05 p.m. Zach Hirsch, (2-1) who pitched in the Huskers’ loss to Northern Colorado on Wednesday will get the start.
