Nebraska scored seven runs in the bottom of the 9th, but their comeback attempt came up short against Michigan State on Thursday in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament.

Nebraska's road to the Big Ten Championship game got a lot bumpier on Wednesday after a 10-9 loss to Michigan State in the first round of the tournament.

The Huskers were down 10-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth, but after scoring four runs, senior Kale Kiser had a bases loaded clearing double with two outs to make the score 10-9.

Freshman lead-off hitter Pat Kelly walked to the plate hoping a hit would score Kiser. After a wild pitch moved the runner to third, Kelly put a good swing on the ball, hitting a line drive, but it was caught by a leaping Ryan Jones at second base.

“Offensively we have never quit the whole year. I thought we swung the bats fantastic, a couple hard breaks,” said Erstad, who pointed out mental errors to the Huskers Sports Network during the postgame show. “It boils down to execution. They executed better than we did. We did fight back well, but at the end of the day it's going to boil down to execution and pitching and they were a little better than us today.”

Nebraska now heads to the consolation bracket and will play the loser of Penn State and Ohio State. The Huskers will wait to announce the starting pitcher until they know who they are playing.
