"Marcus instantly makes all of the other players around him better," head coach Dave Mencarini said. "That is what all great players do. He has great passion and respect for the game and his players. Marcus announced his commitment to Nebraska to his team this morning before our workout before going public. He then went out and had a great workout.
"Marcus just has such great passion and enthusiasm. He's the most aggressive player that I have ever coaches and at the same time off the field he's the most level-headed and great kid. Marcus is the best player that I have ever coached and that's saying something because we have had some great ones. Marcus has the intangibles that you can't coach."
"One of the reasons Marcus chose Nebraska, other than the great fit for him academically, is because of the defense and the great defensive mind of Bo Pelini. Marcus will go to Nebraska and play the same position that Lavonte David played. The style of defense with the big defensive lineman taking up the blocks will allow for the linebackers to make plays.
"The name and label of LaVonte David was thrown around when it came to Marcus and comparing the two. It's a high compliment, but let's be honest, those are some big shoes to fill and each are their own man. It's a compliment but at the same time it's recruiting speak too."
Recruiting Newby was a group effort, but it was led by a single coach. One of the assistant coaches has ties back to Quince Orchard and you would think that he was leading the charge with Newby. That coach was part of the effort, but this was really left up to the new recruiting coordinator and linebacker coach at Nebraska.
"Nebraska did a fantastic job recruiting Marcus and Ross Els was the lead guy for Nebraska. He just did a great job. Of course John Papuchis is a Quince Orchard grad, he walked these halls that Marcus currently does, his family lives around the corner and I coached his brother, but this was Els.
"Coach J.P. did help out. He had some great things to say to Marcus when I was there with Marcus a couple of weeks ago. He said that there would be no promises. No guarantees of playing time. But, he did say that he would put Marcus in the best possible situation to succeed and make sure that he had the right tools to do the job. And while Marcus was there he would help him out any way possible."
One of the things that has helped seal the deal with so many recruits this spring and summer has been one on one time with head coach Bo Pelini while they were in Lincoln. Coach Mencarini said that he had plenty of time to meet with Coach Pelini and he has nothing but respect for how Bo runs his team, his defense and believes that Bo is heading the right direction with the program.
"I had a great chance to talk with Bo while I was in Lincoln and let me just tell you that is a great human being and coach. I have the upmost respect for him. I really believe in what he's doing at Nebraska with the program."
Newby will not only join Coach Papuchis in Lincoln from Quince Orchard. Jason Ankrah was part of the 2009 recruiting class and is also from Quince Orchard and is now the starting defensive end at Nebraska.
