His performance earned him an honorable mention All-Big Ten performer honor, and his hard work also helped establish him as a leader on the Huskers’ defense.
I think there are different types of leaders,” explained defensive line coach Rick Kaczenski. “And he is probably not the most vocal guy, but here is a guy that shows up everyday, does everything he is asked to do and then some.”
Meredith, who as proved as being a solid player against both the pass and the run, believes this year the defense will be more prepared for the different style of play the Big Ten offers.
“There is a different style of play in the Big Ten,” said the senior. “It's more play-action pass and power running games, I would just say it was different.”
Meredith has been a main fixture in the Blackshirt defense for two years now, and has started 27 straight games at the defensive end position.
He is really starting to emerge as a leader, but not as the stereo-typical leader is thought of being.
“He’s not a raw raw guy,” said Kaczenski. “He isn’t going to grab a guy by his facemask, or chest-bump and do all those things, but he is going to lead by doing the same things each and every day, doing them right over and over and guys will follow.”
Meredith will continue to work hard this coming year, and if he plays to the abilities he is capable of he will improve on his honorable mention All-Big Ten honor.
How he ended up in Lincoln:
Meredith was a three-year starter at Mater Dei High School in California, which is a national powerhouse year in and year out.
Even being hampered by injuries as a senior, Meredith was still able to record 65 unassisted tackles (27 assists), and 7.5 sacks. His efforts earned him co-Defensive MVP honors in the Trinity League.
Meredith chose Nebraska over a group of other schools, including: Arizona, Arizona State, Boise State, Colorado, Oklahoma, Oregon, Oregon State, San Diego State, Washington, and Washington State.
