Lincoln, NE- In front of another sell out crowd, the No. 3 ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers volleyball team defeated the Wisconsin Badgers at the Coliseum in Lincoln, 3-0.
"I'm really happy with the win. We did some good things tonight," said head coach John Cook. "Our blocking was good and our attack was good."
In the first set the Badgers came out to play. Multiple miscues by the Huskers would put them in a tough spot early. Crystal Graff of Wisconsin would be huge for the Badgers as she registered six kills. Her Nebraska counterpart Morgan Broekhuis would match her with six kills, the difference being Broekhuis received help from Hannah Werth and Hayley Thramer. The Huskers took the first set 25-22.
"Morgan always competes hard," said Cook. "I think Morgan responded because this was a big match and we needed her."
The second set was the exact opposite. The Huskers opened the second leading 9-1, which included an 8-0 run. It was more of the same from the Nebraska big three up front, combining for 12 kills. Badgers star Alexis Mitchell was injured in the set but would return. Hitting percentage was the name of the game for both teams as the Huskers tallied a .556% while Wisconsin was at just .190. The Huskers took the second set 25-15.
The third set saw a little of everything. Nebraska started on a 9-2 run, the second time of the match. The third however would not be as easy as the second. Crystal Graff of Wisconsin did everything she could to keep the Huskers in it, but the three-headed monster of Thramer, Mancuso and Werth would prove to be too strong, as Nebraska would take the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.
The Huskers have a short turn around, as they will take on the No. 12 Minnesota Sunday at 2 p.m. in Lincoln.
Mancuso knows how powerful the offense will be, and that the Huskers defense will play a big role.
“There a great team, they have attackers in every position so were going to have to put on a defensive show.” said the senior.
