NU top target Brown picks SMU

Four-star guard Sterling Brown, Northwestern's top target in the 2013 recruiting class, has committed to SMU.

Northwestern's top target for the class of 2013 is off the board. Four-star guard Sterling Brown gave his verbal commitment to SMU.

"Everything was a fit for him," Chris Brown, Sterling's father, told Scout.com. "From the coaching staff, to Larry Brown, the beautiful campus, the atmosphere, and the academics with his major, SMU was just the fit for him. He just felt it he fit in and it was right for him."

Brown, a standout for Proviso East (Ill.) High School, picked SMU over offers from Northwestern, DePaul, Minnesota, and Oregon State, among others.

During the summer, Northwestern turned its attention to Brown as its top target, with associate head coach Tavaras Hardy leading the recruitment.

NU's 2013 recruiting class currently is filled with three-star guard Jaren Sina and three-star forward Nate Taphorn. The class will likely finish with just those two.
