Wildcats headed to the Gator Bowl

Northwestern will play Mississippi State in the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl on New Year's Day.

All signs were pointing Northwestern to the Capital One Bowl before Sunday. However, a late flop altered those plans.

Instead, the Wildcats will play Mississippi State in the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl, Northwestern officially announced. The Capital One Bowl, with its first pick, chose 10-3 Nebraska to return for a second consecutive year. The Outback Bowl elected to take Michigan.

The Chicago Tribune reports it was the Big Ten's sway which forced the Capital One Bowl into selecting Legends Division champion Nebraska over Northwestern. The two schools met on October 20 with the Cornhuskers overcoming a fourth-quarter deficit to earn a victory
