Miller Captures Silver Football

At the conclusion of a fantastic year, Braxton Miller has been named the Big Ten MVP. The Ohio State sophomore quarterback has won the Big Ten Silver Football honor as voted on by league coaches.

Braxton Miller didn't win any major national awards Thursday night at the College Football Awards Show despite his presence in Orlando, but he did earn the Big Ten's biggest honor.

The Ohio State quarterback was named the winner of the Chicago Tribune Silver Football, awarded to the Big Ten MVP in a vote of the league's coaches. The newspaper's story announcing his honor can be found here.

The Huber Heights, Ohio, native led the Buckeyes to an undefeated season, using both his arm and his legs to power the top scoring offense in the Big Ten. He was a big-play machine all season, leading the league by taking part in 27 plays of 30 yards or more on the campaign. Ten of those went for 50 yards or more.

Miller, who is also up for the Manning Award, threw for 2,039 yards and 15 TDs while completing nearly 60 percent (148-254) of his passes. On the ground, he led the Buckeyes with 1,271 rushing yards and 13 TDs and recorded six 100-yard rushing games, including a school QB record 186 in the win over Nebraska.

In the process, Miller became just the third different QB in Big Ten history to rush for at least 1,000 yards in a season. He topped Bobby Hoying's official school record with 3,310 yards of total offense, though Terrelle Pryor's record of 3,526 yards in 13 games in 2010 has since been wiped off the record books.

Miller was up for the Davey O'Brien national quarterback honor, which went to Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M on Thursday. Miller, the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and a first-team All-Big Ten choice by the media, was not invited to New York City as part of the Heisman Trophy ceremony but seems ticketed to finish in the top five.
