CoachSpeak: Wood on Smith
Corey Smith profile "He is a very explosive player," said Wood. "He is a dynamic guy who can do a lot with the football in his hands. "He has been a tremendous player for us on offense and he's helped us with some special teams things also." The 2011 National Champion EMCC Lions were fortunate to get Smith on their roster this season, but the staff in Scooba was no stranger to the talented four star. "We had been talking to him before he went to Grand Rapids and we thought he was coming to our place out of high school," said Wood. "He decided to stay close to home, but we were fortunate enough to get him when he decided to leave Grand Rapids." Despite being a newcomer, Smith blossomed in the East Mississippi offense quickly becoming the go to guy in the passing game. "It didn't take him long," said Wood. "He knows how to run routes and he knows how to use his hands. "We are not overly complicated on offense and he knew the routes. "He picked up on it fast and did a super job." Wood believes a more polished wide receiver will make the move from Scooba to Starkville next fall. "I thought his blocking got a lot better as the year went along," said Wood. "We had a great running back in Rodriguez Moore. "I think Corey did a great job opening up some things for him on the edge. "He has always done a good job catching the short ball, but he is really good at taking the short ball and turning it long. "I don't know if he gained that this year, but he really showcased that this year. "A lot of his long balls were really short plays that he turned long." Wood reports that Smith appears to have found a good match with Mississippi State. "I think it will be great for our state to have him in here," said Wood of Smith's pledge to the Bulldogs. "He has had schools nationwide looking at him. "I think the idea of playing in a warmer climate than what he is used to from playing back home in Akron might be a factor. "I know he seems solid with them, so hopefully some good things happen for him and for them."
