Nebraska junior quarterback Taylor Martinez was asked to compare a typical SEC defense with a typical Big Ten defense.

ORLANDO, Flor. - Nebraska junior quarterback Taylor Martinez smirked on Friday morning when he was asked about the perception SEC defenses usually have more speed than any other conference.

“No…not at all,” said the California native.

Martinez, who was named first-team All-Big Ten by the conference’s coaches, says he thinks Tuesday’s contest against Georgia will actually be similar to a Big Ten game.

“Everything is pretty much the same as a Big Ten defense – they are both good up,” said Martinez, when asked to compare Georgia to a Big Ten typical defense. “They are big up front. They have good corners. It’s pretty much exactly the same actually.

“Everyone thinks the SEC is the strongest in the nation, because they go to the National Championship every year, but this year I think the Big Ten was really strong, so we will see how all of our teams play out this year.”

Martinez was also asked about SEC’s average size of defense and if they were bigger than the Big Ten.

“Not really. The Big Ten is pretty big as well,” said the junior quarterback.

Martinez has only faced one SEC defense during his career – a loss to South Carolina in last year’s Capital One Bowl. Then a sophomore, Martinez completed 10-of-16 passing, for 116 yards and one touchdown. On the ground, he only managed to collect 37 yards on 16 attempts.

The Huskers will square off against Georgia on New Years Day at 1 p.m. ET. The game can be seen on ABC.
