His name? John Stephens.
Fast-forward to the present as Devin White, a 6-3, 210-pound RB/LB at North Webster HS in Springhill, is drawing comparisons to Stephens in terms of his ability.
"I had 780 yards rushing with 10 touchdowns," White said of his ninth-grade season. "The year went good. I was only on defense at first because there were older running backs, but our starting running back got a concussion against Calvary (Baptist). I got in, ran hard and the coaches kept me back there after that.
"My biggest game was in the last regular season game against Booker T. Washington. We got a two-point win and thought we were fighting for a first-round playoff game -- but ended up having to travel in the first round. I had 224 yards rushing with two TDs and a big stop near the end to prevent a score."
White, coached by John Ware at North Webster, takes care of classroom business.
"I take honors courses and have a high GPA although I don't know exactly what it is," he said. "Report cards are about to come out."
"I think I'll be a linebacker in college," he said. "I'm aggressive. I really don't know how many tackles I had, but I had an interception and 50-yard return against North Caddo (where Ware previously coached)."
White is also known for his basketball skills.
"I'm doing good, averaging around 14 points a game," he said. "I had 23 against a Shreveport 4A school (Woodlawn) and 21 last night (vs. Captain Shreve)."
