2013 Signee Spotlight: Kevin Gladney

Kevin Gladney is the only listed true wide receiver signee for the Huskers in the 2013 class.

Kevin Gladney

6-foot-2, 185 pounds / Firestone HS (Akron, OH)

“Kevin is a very good route runner and has some polish to him. I would say above-average size, good hands and maybe not the fastest guy, but does everything else well which allows him to create separation from the defenders. There are a lot of receivers in the NFL and college that aren’t speed guys, but are great receivers because they know the craft.”
- Allen Trieu, Fox Sports NEXT National Recruiting Analyst

Senior Honors: Second-team All-Ohio Selection as a senior

Senior Stats: 48 receptions for 780 yards and 12 touchdowns.

The Lowdown: Gladney is one of three commitments from the state of Ohio in the 2013 class for Nebraska. The 2013 recruit was a name that threw around the Huskers as a team he was looking at, but really seemed to be favoring Michigan State early on. That is until Gladney visited Lincoln. The senior visited Nebraska a couple of weeks before Big Red Weekend in June and had some fun with head coach Bo Pelini after deciding he wanted to commit.

"I got a chance to sit down with Coach Bo towards the end of my visit and I asked my family to leave us alone,” said Gladney at the time of his commitment. “I was just looking at him in the eye and I began to thank him for Nebraska's interest in me. It was like I wasn't going to commit. You should have seen his face.

"I kept going with it too. I told him that Nebraska was a good school and had a nice campus and everything. I then told him that I want to be a Cornhusker. He sat there looking at me and I told him that I was committing to him. He jumped up and gave me a big hug."

Gladney is the type of player that doesn't have elite speed, but always seems to be open. Credit Gladney’s awareness of the opposing defense as well as his route-running skills. The wide receiver is a dependable target that will help open things up deep for players like Kenny Bell and Jamal Turner.

There is something to be said about Gladney’s abilities on the basketball court as well. As a junior, Gladney averaged 19 points per game and midway through his senior year has pushed that to 20 points per game. There had been some unofficial inquiries to Gladney’s basketball coach about D-I basketball interest. Gladney said that playing two sports in college is a possibility, but you will definitely be able to find him on the football field.

The Ohio native is one of the players that when you look at the 2013 recruiting class you will glance over his name. He goes down as the only rated wide receiver in the class and because he doesn’t have the rating of some of the other commits, he might get missed. Remember the name though as a player that could be that possession, work horse receiver for Nebraska for years to come.

Why Nebraska: “Nebraska just fits me. It's what I am looking for in a campus. It's all so close together. The doctors, nutritionist, coaches, weight room, locker room and everything else is all right there at the stadium. I honestly believe that there is no better campus out there."

Who Else: Iowa, Michigan State, Michigan, Purdue, Vanderbilt, Akron, Miami (Ohio) and Cincinnati

Who Recruited Him: Rich Fisher and John Papuchis

BRR Projection: Wide Receivers coach Rich Fisher has told Gladney that he figures into the picture at the “X” and the “Z” spots. While Gladney makes the jump from high school to college he also sees the Nebraska no-huddle offense as a challenge. He says that because he gives 100 percent all the time that he should pick up the system in no time. Nebraska is looking for a reliable receiver to go along with more vertical threats and Gladney certainly fits the bill.
