Rex Burkhead's impact goes far beyond what he accomplished on the field. Plano (TX) Mayor Phil Dyer and the city council recognized Burkhead for his accomplishments as a Nebraska Cornhusker and also his work with pediatric brain cancer patient Jack Hoffman.

The City Council meeting in downtown Plano, Texas was in session was set to honor one of their hometown sons. Rex Burkhead was back in town in time to get some special recognition from the Plano Mayor, Phil Dyer, and the rest of the City Council for Burkhead's work on the field at Nebraska but especially off of it and being recognized as the Uplifting Athletes Rare Disease Champion Award winner.

"It was awesome," Burkhead said. "Coming home to where you grew up, seeing a bunch of your old coaches, former teachers and friends you grew up with was very special. It's very humbling and a great honor to have the mayor and the city council recognize you at a meeting. It was very special."

Team Jack has captivated not only the people and the state of Nebraska, but the entire country. With the NFL Draft around the corner some wonder where might Burkhead's commitment to service be in the future? Burkhead says that he's giving it thought, that he will stay involved with Team Jack and would like to form his own foundation or charity.

"I have been thinking about it, but I definitely want to stay involved with pediatric brain cancer especially with Team Jack and the Uplifting Athletes chapter at Nebraska. I can help promote things a little more than they can now, but I will definitely be in contact with them. I would like to get a charity or an organization formed bringing those two things together and build something huge."

Besides having a chance to be recognized by the Plano City Council there was also an opportunity to chat with some Nebraska fans one last time. There were roughly 75 fans in attendance tonight with most wearing No. 22 jerseys int the crowd. Looking back Burkhead says that he is sure that he made the right choice because of his opportunities on and off the field while he was in Nebraska.

"It was a great four years," Burkhead said. "I had an unbelievable experience at Nebraska with the fans, their support and their love throughout those four years was incredible. It's a place like no other with the opportunities that you have on and off the field. I have relationships with some guys on the football team that I will carry on forever. I definitely made the right decision to attend Nebraska."
