Nebraska running back Rex Burkhead has been selected by the Cincinnati Begals in the 6th round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Nebraska running back Rex Burkhead has been selected by the Cincinnati Begals in the 6th round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Banged up for much of his senior year, Burkhead still rushed for 675 yards on just 98 carries in 2013. He left Nebraska with over 3,332 career rushing yards, finding the end zone 30 times.

"Excited to be a part of the @Bengals organization! Can't wait to go to work in Cincy. Thanks to everybody for all your support," Burkhead tweeted from his Twitter account on Saturday afternoon.

Cincinnati finished the year 10-7 last season, losing to Houston in the Wildcard round.

The Bengals were led in rushing by BenJarvus Green-Ellis, who ran for 1,094 yards on 278 carries.

Measuring in at 5-foot-10, 214 pounds, the former All-Big Ten running back jumped 39 inches in the vertical jump at the NFL Combine, placing him second among running backs, behind only former Texas A&M product Christine Michael.

In the broad jump, Burkhead jumped 125 inches, once again second among running backs only behind former LSU Tiger Michael Ford.

While his 4.73 forty was not what he hoped for, Burkhead showed burst in the 20-yard shuttle, running a 4.09, second among running backs to once again Michael.

In the 60-yard shuttle, Burkhead’s 11.51, was only .18 off of former Oregon running back Kenjon Barner. Burkhead had the fifth best time among running backs in the category.

"Rex is a pretty special football player and a special kid. I think everybody can see what he can do as a football player," Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini told reporters at Big Ten media days last July. "He's tough. He can do it all on the field.

He's multi-talented. He has all the intangibles. But beyond that, what he does for your football team and your program is tremendous.

"I mean, he's, to me, the definition of what a role model is and what a student-athlete should be. And the things he does in our community, the type of leader he is, the type of example he sets on a daily basis, what he's accomplished in the classroom, I wouldn't trade him for another player in the country. That's how much I think of Rex."
