Last year freshman Shavon Shields was a pleasant surprise on the court, can the sophomore take his game to another level this year?

Shavon Shields Shavon Shields profile

Height: 6-foot-6

Weight: 214 pounds

Year: Sophomore

Hometown: Olathe, KS

Previous School: Northwest High School (KS)

Out of High School Offers: Nebraska, Long Beach State, Wyoming, and Weber State

Strengths: After starting his freshman year injured, Shields emerged as one of the best players on the 2012-13 roster. His ability to play inside out was a real luxury for the Huskers last season and maybe even a little unexpected. The son of former Nebraska football great Will Shilds, Shavon used his size to take smaller defenders off the dribble, and would pull up for a mid-range jump shot against taller defenders. He scored a career high 29-points against Penn State in Happy Valley last season, earning Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors, which ended up putting him on the map.

Weaknesses: Despite showing that he was Big Ten basketball ready as a true freshman, there is still much that Shields can improve on. The sophomore likes to play beyond the three point line, and if he stays out there again this upcoming season, his ball handling will have to improve drastically. Shields was caught with out a dribble very far away from the basket last season, this due to heavy ball pressure and the inability to take a defender off the dribble. Quickness will also have to be improved if he wants to be a 3 or a stretch 4. Too often, Shields was taken off the dribble and with a small front court the Huskers defense can’t afford to have opposing offenses attacking the rim.

2012-2013 Look Back: Shields started every conference game last season except for the first one. The Kansas product averaged 8.6 ppg. and 5.1 rpg. while shooting 47 percent from the field. In Big Ten play, Shields averaged 9.2 ppg. and 6.0 rpg. while shooting 42.3 percent from the field. He was also named Big Ten Freshman of the Week twice.

2013-2014 Outlook: Shields will be a cornerstone of the offense, but will not have the pressure of handling the scoring. Pitchford and Pettaway will draw a majority of the attention, opening up many scoring opportunities for the sophomore.
