Patriots DB Dennard Arrested
While former tight end Aaron Hernandez is accused of murder, Patriots cornerback Alfonzo Dennard was arrested Thursday morning in Lincoln, Nebraska on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Dennard was stopped just before 2 a.m. on Normal Boulevard after a Lincoln police sergeant observed a red Honda Accord straddling lane lines, and the starting cornerback "emitted an odor of alcohol and displayed signs of impairment," according to a police report.
Dennard was transported to a substance-abuse treatment facility for a Breathalyzer exam. However, police said the NFL player and former Nebraska standout "would not provide an adequate breath sample for testing."
Dennard faces the following charges: DUI, refusal of a chemical test and straddling lane lines.
Released from jail, Dennard has an Aug. 12 court date, right in the middle of the Patriots' training camp.
Dennard was convicted of felony assault for assaulting a police officer and was sentenced in April to two years of probation, 30 days in jail and community service.
. When Dennard was sentenced, the presiding judge, Stephanie Stacy, warned him that he needed to behave.
"There are a lot of people who are watching you — young athletes who will model your behavior, your attitudes, particularly about law enforcement," Stacy said "I hope this order of probation gives you an opportunity to set a positive example and positively influence people. I encourage you take advantage of that. Good luck to you."
Although the league and the Patriots haven't said anything yet about Dennard, he'll face potential discipline under the NFL personal-conduct policy.
He may have also jeopardized his status on the roster.
Dennard is also represented by Athletes First, the same agency that represents Hernandez.
