Needing game reps

If projected second-string quarterback Tommy Armstrong is indeed the backup to Taylor Martinez, look for Nebraska to try to get him work early in the non-conference portion of the schedule.

CHICAGO, IL - Nebraska senior quarterback Taylor Martinez has taken the majority of snaps for the Huskers over the last two seasons.

With his senior year approaching, and very little game experience behind him, the question now becomes will the Huskers try to get key reps for backups going forward in 2013?

When asked about the topic during the spring, offensive coordinator Tim Beck said “whatever it takes to win,” Nebraska would do.

While that might be the case, head coach Bo Pelini realizes the importance of experience going forward. The sixth-year head coach talked about the topic at Big Ten Media Days.

Tommy Armstrong (redshirt-freshman) is probably the No. 2 right now, Ron Kellogg (senior) is on the table with what he brings to the table - maybe a combination of the two if we were to play tomorrow,” said Pelini. It's going to be important for us to get those guys on the field early on.

“You just never know, we have been really fortunate with Taylor that he hasn't gone down for a extended period of time. We have been lucky in that regards because now we are set up to endure a long-term injury by our quarterback, even though we don't want that to happen obviously. I think we would feel a little better if we lost him for a game or two now than I would have a year or two ago, because it could have been disastrous.”

A large portion of the Nebraska fan base wanted to see quarterback Brion Carnes, who has since transferred after free falling on the depth chart, get work during the 2011 season when he was the backup to Martinez.

Listening to Pelini, it becomes pretty obvious why Carnes didn't get the time - “it could have been disastrous.”
