In our next issue of Big Red Report magazine, we ask the Lincoln Journal Star's Brian Rosenthal, BRR's Josh Harvey, and the Voice of the Nebraska Cornhuskers Kent Pevelka to preview a handful of topics regarding the 2013-14 hoops season.
For a small preview of what's to come in the magazine, check out this question.
It's not often you see a guy like Ray Gallegos, who was second in the team in scoring and first in minutes last year, see a diminished role the following season, but could we possibly see him not relied upon as much this season?
Rosenthal: “I think his role will be diminished, but not in a negative aspect. I think Ray tried to do too much last year because he knew he needed to. People got on him for shooting all those three pointers, but he had to. They didn't have any other options. If it looked like he was trying to carry the team, he was, because he needed to. I don't think he will have to do that this year, which will help his game. Credit to Ray, in talking with him this offseason, his ball handling has gotten better. He knows he needs to take it to the rim more and create for his teammates. Even though he's a senior, and I think will be a starter, I think there will be competition for him as well, which will be good for him.”
Pavelka: “I think people who say he will have a diminished role will be wrong. He might not play as many minutes, but I am close to wagering that he starts every game if healthy. I think his game will be helped a lot with better players around him. There was a huge load on him last year. I don't think teams will be able to help off as much as they did last year. People sort of short-sell him for some reason, but if his development is anything like it was last year, he could breakout. He's a good player.”
Harvey: “I don’t think Nebraska will rely on his as much this season, which ultimately ends up being a good thing. With as many playmakers that should be on the floor, Gallegos should be a guy that has the ability to stretch defenses. Last year there was too much focus on him.”
