A healthy Shavon Shields showed he's one of the best players in the Big Ten on Monday night.

LINCOLN, Neb. - Coming into Monday night’s contest against Ohio State, Nebraska sophomore forward Shavon Shields was averaging just five points over the last five contests – all games Nebraska dropped.

But on Monday the Kansas City native seemed back to his old self. Driving the lane and hitting from long distance, Shields recorded 18-points and was crucial in the Huskers’ 68-62 upset over No. 17 Ohio State.

“He was so determined. His legs were fresher, too,” said Nebraska head coach Tim Miles. “He had been beat up. He wouldn’t tell you that and we wouldn’t tell you that, but he was trying to do the right thing for the team. You could just see he looked fresher physically. But his determination, I mean, nobody was going to stop him. It was like that guy from last year that we knew was going to take the next step. That was Shavon taking the next step. We wouldn’t have won this game without him.”

Fellow leading score Terran Petteway, who also had 18-points, agreed with Miles.

“I saw the old version (Shavon Shields). That’s the Shavon I know,” said Petteway. “The one that came tonight. He played his butt off. I’m glad he’s back and I hope that guy stays.”

Shields a team captain, suffered an injury is averaging 11.4 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Nebraska is quickly showing the Big Ten they can beat anyone on any given night, but Shields has to be healthy to be competitive.
