Tommy has the leg up?

Is their a quarterback battle brewing in Lincoln? On Monday, Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini says there is at least a clear front-runner.

CHICAGO, IL - It only took two questions for Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini to be asked about his cat at Big Ten Media Days and five to be asked about the quarterback battle brewing in Lincoln.

“Because of his starting experience, I would say Tommy has a little bit of a leg up going in. But Johnny Stanton and Ryker Fyfe are tremendous talents,” said Pelini. I think it's going to be an open competition. Like I said, I think when we line up day one, it will be Tommy will walk out there take the first snap. Because he has the most experience. He kind of earned that right through the spring. But I think the competition is, gosh, very good. I think it's going to make all three of those guys better.”

While quarterback battles are often played up the most in the press, Nebraska head coach reminded the media all positions are up for grab this time of year.

“I tell our guys at every single position, nobody has a guaranteed spot ever, and you gotta put it on film every day,” said Pelini. “You've got to go out there, compete on a daily basis and work hard. And when you have that attitude, that makes everybody around you better. And that's going to make them better.”

Pelini’s other message to his players – worry about yourself only and don’t read too much into things.

“The guys who make a mistake of worrying about where they are or who they're repping with how many reps I'm getting or anything like that, a lot of times it leads them to worrying about things other than what they need to control,” said Pelini. “Be the best football player you can be and trust your coaches that if you earn it, you're going to be the one on that spot.

“I think our guys, there's enough trust in our program between the players and coaches and kind of how we do our business that they understand if you're putting it on film, you're going to be out there on the field getting reps.”
