The Huskers are wrapping up fall camp and possible redshirts are starting to pan out.

LINCOLN, Neb. - Thursday’s Nebraska fall camp practice was the last open session the media will likely see in 2014 – capping off a few week period where observers got a much better feel for the program.

Practicing for about 1.5 hours, the Huskers workout mirrored Wednesday’s practice, as the Huskers anxiously wait for game week.

“We got a good core of our base in, today was a big day for that,” defensive coordinator John Papuchis said. “We still have a lot of work to do—we just started today, but in terms of the ‘base’ defense we got a lot of it in today.”

To hear more from Papuchis, you can the video below courtesy of Huskers.com:

The race for the starting CB…

It turns out there likely won’t be a race – it’s more about the amount of reps. Papuchis confirmed junior Daniel Davie and junior Jonathan Rose co-starters at the moment and both will see a lot of reps next Saturday, no matter who is starting.

Josh Mitchell has established himself as the starter on one side,” Papuchis said. “We are going to play both of the guys, so who lines up first I am not sure of yet but we are going to give both of them an opportunity to play.”

Lately it appears Davie has been taking more first-team reps than Rose in practices observed by the media.

Gangwish excited for opportunity…

Head out to a Nebraska fall practice the past few weeks and one of the biggest surprises has come on the defensive line.

Jack Gangwish, a junior from Wood River, Nebraska, has positioned himself to be the Huskers No. 3 defensive end heading into the season. At this point, the walk-on has out-performed junior college transfer Joe Keels and redshirt freshman A.J. Natter.

In the video below, the junior talks about his journey from scout team to reps and his desire to be a walk-on at a young age.

Harvey’s other practice donuts:

* Injury report: TE.) Greg Hart (out – uknown), OT.) Zach Sterup (out – leg wrapped), DT.) Kevin Williams (limited – ankle), WR.) Sam Burtch (out – unknown), FB.) Andy Janovich (out – leg wrapped), WR.) Brandon Reilly (out-hamstring).

* Running back Ameer Abdullah was held out of practice. It looked to be nothing more than just a day of rest for the senior Heisman candidate. Sophomore running back Terrell Newby missed time early in fall camp and the staff got an extended look at the California native today.

* True freshman D.J. Foster continued to take second team reps with the defensive tackles on Thursday.

* Sophomore receiver Alonzo Moore had the play of the day, sliding to catch a 20-yard strike from quarterback Tommy Armstrong.

* Davie says freshman corner Chris Jones has the longest arms he's ever seen and it really helps him as a corner. He also said freshman safety Kieron Williams is a hitter and he's had to calm him down a few times in practice about being too pumped up.
