Aleks Maric finished with nine points and 10 rebounds, one of four Huskers with at least nine points in the loss. Freshman Jamel White totaled a team-high 12 points, while Wes Wilkinson finished with 10 points. In addition to Maric, junior Marcus Perry also chipped in nine points, all in the first half as the Huskers trailed by just three, 38-35, at the break.
LaMarcus Aldridge had 21 points and 12 rebounds for Texas, while Kenton Paulino scored 19 points, including seven in the game-changing 15-0 run in the second half that broke open a close contest. With the win, Texas (21-3, 9-1 Big 12) remained in first place in the Big 12, while the Huskers dipped to 15-8 overall and 5-5 in the league after their second straight loss.
The Cornhuskers held P.J. Tucker, the Longhorns' leading scorer, to six points. Tucker had recorded three straight double-doubles but went scoreless in the first half and spent much of the second half on the bench in foul trouble.
In the first half, Nebraska hit 6-of-10 from 3-point range to push the Longhorns. Perry hit three 3-pointers as the teams traded the lead seven times over the final seven minutes of the half. The Cornhuskers shot 50 percent against the best defensive team in the Big 12.
Nebraska trailed 13-9 after a Paulino 3-pointer at the 12:18 mark but B.J. Walker's jumper started an 11-2 run with White hitting a 3-pointer before Perry added a pair of treys to give the Huskers a 20-15 lead with 8:48 to play. UT rallied to take a 21-20 lead before Perry added this third straight 3-pointer to put Nebraska ahead 23-21.
The teams traded baskets the next three minutes before Wilkinson's 3-pointer with 4:40 left gave the Huskers their final lead of the game at 28-26. Wilkinson added another trey with just over three minutes left to tie it at 31-all before a late surge gave the Longhorns a three-point lead at the intermission.
Tucker scored the first basket of the second with a short hook over two defenders but picked up his third foul six seconds later and went to the bench for the next six minutes. Daniel Gibson and Paulino added 3-pointers and two free throws by Aldridge pushed Texas' lead to 50-41.
Paulino then lifted the Longhorns as he drove around two Huskers for a baseline layup, then followed it with a steal and coasted in for another easy basket. After Nebraska coach Barry Collier was hit with a technical foul, Paulino hit a deep 3-pointer from the right wing, his fourth of the game, for a 58-41 lead with 12 minutes left.
Meanwhile, Aldridge kept ripping down rebounds and getting to the free throw line, where he went 9-of-13. After hitting five 3-pointers in the first half, the Huskers hit just one during Texas' game-breaking run.
The Huskers return to action on Wednesday, as they travel to Iowa State. The game will be carried on the Pinnacle Sports Radio Network as well as on Fox Sports Midwest in the state of Nebraska.
