Getting To Know: Carl Nicks

Nicks will figure into the picture at OT

The search had gone into December and it seemed that the further Nebraska and Coach Wagner went it was just a fruitless search. Then came Carl Nicks. Nicks had been quietly tucked away at Hartnell (Calif.) J.C. Nicks didn't make the decision just for himself to come to Nebraska, but for his family. Here is Carl Nicks, one on one.

Name: Carl Nicks
School: Hartnell (Calif.) J.C.
Height: 6-foot-5
Weight: 330
40-time: 5.1

Position(s) played last year: Offensive Tackle

Stats: Not recorded

Honors: All conference, all Northern California, all state and all-American

Official Visit Date: December 10

Enjoyed the most on official visit: "Probably watching them practice. They were getting ready for the bowl game. It was the whole intensity and the focus they had. They also had fun while they were doing it. I had never seen anything like it."

"If it wasn't the practice, it was the banquet. That was pretty awesome. The whole football team just seemed like a family. It wasn't too formal, because, I don't know I could just feel something like the love for the team. It was something that you couldn't help but notice. It was just amazing."

Biggest factor in choosing Nebraska: "The whole thing I was looking for some place safe for my family. I was looking at education and how they were going to help you. I was also looking at playing early and they have slots available at that position. It's a good squad, I have a great opportunity to play, they have a great schedule coming up and I really got along great with the coach."

Other schools considered: Washington, Louisville, Kansas, Oregon State, California, Wisconsin, and Florida

What are you looking forward to the most when it comes to getting to Nebraska: "Playing football! It feels like it's been forever since I played last. I am looking forward to everything. Every sprint. All of the off the field stuff. Everything. Anything that has to do with football. I want the whole thing."

Funny recruiting story: "I don't really have a funny story, but there are some unique things. When I was looking to commit I was looking to go there with my family (wife and child). I was looking for safety. When I was there the coach did a good job of taking me around and showing me that things were safe there. There were people there just standing around, but out here it's a little bit different. There isn't any violence there; no gangs. People were running at 10:00 at night. Doors were open. It just felt really safe there. That was one of the biggest things I was looking for. That and my education."

Number desired: "I want "77". That is just the number that I had in JUCO. There really isn't any other significance other than that."

Message to Husker Nation: "I would just tell them expect us to do good because that is all that they are about and that is all that I am about. It's what's expected."
