From the health of the team to its identity, coaches from Head Coach Bo Pelini to Tight End Coach…
Team prepared for Texas Tech
Coming off a loss the likes of which Nebraska experienced this last weekend, getting back to basics has been the theme throughout this week. As far as finishing up practices as they prepare to face the No. 7 Red Raiders, Head Coach Bo Pelini said that his team is on the right track. "I thought we had a good week of practice. They (the players) are understanding the game plan, what we need to do, and I like how they came back after what happened Saturday," he said. "We've got to make sure we finish our mental preparations; make sure we know what is being asked of them on every call, so we can execute. That's what we've got to do. We have to take it from the practice field to the game field." Coach Pelini said that the status of senior linebacker Cody Glenn is still day-to-day, Glenn missing all this week stemming from an injury suffered against Missouri. Glenn, Nebraska's leader this season in tackles (35), did practice yesterday in limited fashion, and Pelini said that while he's not for certain as to whether or not he will travel with the team, he still remained optimistic. If Glenn can't go Sophomore Blake Lawrence is listed as the person who would be taking his place. The Kansas native has played in three games this year, totaling four tackles, but Lawrence isn't seen as someone who can duplicate Glenn's athleticism at the position. Freshman Matt Holt got some reps in last week's game, and while not as athletic as Glenn, could be one of the alternatives at the position as well as junior safety Major Culbert. Culbert started out as a safety and actually took reps as a running back early in his career with the Huskers. Last year, though, he primarily played linebacker at the same position Glenn plays now. Culbert was moved back to safety, but depending on the scheme Nebraska runs, it wouldn't be out of line that if Glenn can't go, you need to substitute as much athleticism and experience at that position as you can. Culbert may be it. With Nebraska going on the road for the first time this season, there's going to be the factor of crowd noise. Coach Pelini said that they have been working with crowd noise every day this week. It could be just the situation itself, though, that might cause some to have concern about the team's mentality in a game away from home, especially coming off the 52-17 blasting in Memorial, at the hands of the No. 2 Tigers. For Pelini it's a non-issue. "I have confidence that they know what's expected of them, and whether it's on the road or at home, it comes down to playing between the lines and executing and doing what you have to do. "I don't feel any different going on the road than I do at home." While Pelini doesn't admit to seeing a difference between how his team plays in regard to where they are at, his experience in this conference and during his time in the SEC, he learned to appreciate what hostile environments are like, and how you can even use that as a visiting team. "That's one of the good things about playing in conferences like this - you have a lot of great atmospheres, and it ought to be a lot of fun for the team to go out there and (it) creates a great challenge. "I told them, you have to take an us against the world mentality when you go out on the road, and that's what we are going to do." Nebraska will get into Lubbock Friday, but Coach Pelini said that they won't do a walk through in the stadium this week. Pelini also commented on the fullback situation as to who could be starting, senior Thomas Lawson missing the last two weeks due to recovering from the removal of his appendix and the improved play at the position of senior tight end Hunter Teafatiller. Coach Pelini said that the two were interchangeable, and couldn't say how many more reps one might get than the other or who would start the game. Nebraska goes into the contest against Texas Tech as 17-point underdogs. The game is scheduled to kickoff at 2:00 p.m. central time, and will be aired on Fox Sports Net Nebraska Football Tickets
