In just two years, Henery has established himself among the top kickers in the nation, supported by his 90% field goal percentage (26-of-29). The Omaha native had a signature moment in the 2008 regular season finale by knocking in a school-record 57-yard field goal against Colorado. The kick proved to be the decisive points in the win as the Huskers went on to a 40-31 victory.
In 2008, Henery was 18-of-21 on field goals following a perfect 8-of-8 campaign in 2007. A 2008 second-team All-Big 12 selection, Henery is also among the most efficient PAT kickers, as he has missed on just one attempt (101-of-102) during his career.
The former walk-on will have stiff competition for the 2009 Groza Award, as 2008 finalist Josh Arauco (Arkansas State) and 2007 winner Thomas Weber (Arizona) join him on this year’s pre-season list.
More than 300 media representatives, coaches, past recipients, conference and university officials will make up the voting panel to select the winner. The award will be presented on Dec. 10, 2009 on ESPN’s Home Depot College Football Awards program.
