Nebraska commit Walker Ashburn talks about his season, recruiting and his recent in home visit with…
Nebraska on the verge of something great?
Yeah, he kind of knew it was coming. Husker commit, defensive end Walker Ashburn had a pretty good idea. First, because P.J. Smith, a former teammate of his at Curtis Christian down in Louisiana told him it might be a bit chilly. Secondly, because it's north…way north from where he's used to being. So, overall impression of his official trip? "Cold. It was cold," Ashburn said with a laugh. "But P.J. told me after awhile you just get used to it." With his team making another stab at yet another title this year, Ashburn wasn't really into the whole recruiting deal during his own season. That's why he pulled the trigger so early, the Louisiana native committing to Nebraska back in September, before his own final prep season even began. Walker was actually commit number six in what is currently a class of 18. It's been awhile since he pulled the trigger, as you can see. And he's gotten a chance to see a lot of Nebraska since. Like much of the country, especially when it comes to the defense, he definitely has liked what he's seen. But what he found amazing about his time with the team this weekend wasn't about appreciating what the team had done. They were already beyond it. "Nobody is thinking about what they did. Everyone is talking about next year, and they aren't talking about just doing better. They are talking about a championship," Ashburn said. Coming so close, a now infamous one second away from a conference championship – you can figure a team should come out thinking that the game was oh-so close to being theirs. But what you might not necessarily expect is that with the loss of some players, not the least of which is one Ndamukong Suh, that they would feel they will be closer to that title next year than they were this year. But that's the feeling Ashburn got from every coach and player he talked with while he was there. "Nobody is talking about who is gone, because there are a lot of younger guys who got some time and they are ready for next year," he said. "I talked to so many players and I think, all the coaches. Everyone is the same way." For Walker, he knows where he'll be. Lined up at defensive end, taking that 6-3, 245 lbs. frame off the edge or stopping to defend the run. With all the jostling about that has been speculated on, from sophomore Cameron Meredith moving inside or perhaps even fellow sophomore Baker Steinkuhler moving to offense, a player as versatile as Ashburn could wonder if his position now will be his position in the future. Walker said the coaches talked to him about his versatility and his ability to move inside. But that's not where he'll play. "I'm staying at defensive end. They talked to me about how they saw me as someone who could make that move. But they definitely want to keep me at end," he said. For the season Ashburn was Suh-like with his numbers, notching a whopping 18 sacks on the season, which added to his other total, gave him around 95 tackles for the year. It was good enough to earn him first-team everything in the state of Louisiana as well as being named the State Defensive Player of the Year. His team fell just one game short of winning the state title, which is always the goal for every player around the country. But he's happy knowing that not only does he have a chance to win more titles where he's going, everyone already there is expecting that, that is just what they are going to do. "Everyone is focused on the future. Nobody is looking back at what they did. Nobody even talks about it," he said. "So, it's exciting, because I don't know if I am getting there at just the right time. But it feels like we are right there, ready to do something great. It should be a lot of fun."
