| Derron Smith played quarterback during his junior season and passed for 1,214 yards for nine touchdowns. He also rushed for 1,094 yards on 140 carries for eight more scores. He also had 87 tackles, nine tackles for loss and three interceptions (one for a touchdown). Named Defensive MVP of the Mountain Pass League and Team MVP. Was named First Team All-CIF and All-Area Honorable Mention. Smith also plays basketball (point guard; averages 17 points, six rebounds and three steals per game). He only plans on playing football in college. Smith says he can bench 235-pounds, squat 420 and claims a 38-inch vertical jump.
As a 2007 sophomore at Banning (Calif.), Smith rushed for over 500 yards, passed for over 600 yards and had five interceptions from his safety spot.
Final senior season (4-6) stats: 1,526 yards rushing for 13 touchdowns; 1,200 yards passing for three scores; 109 tackles, six interceptions (three taken back for touchdowns), three fumbles recovered and one fumble caused
Smith plans on majoring in either kinesiology or business. He reports a 3.1 core GPA and a 1480 three-part SAT score.
Smith: “I have great footwork and can move quick. I don’t have blazing straight ahead speed, but I move well. I’m also smart and know what the offense is gonna do. I’m a ball hawk and a sure tackler.
“I want to work on breaking on the ball. I want to improve my back peddle and sideline-to-sideline movement. I also want to get faster.”
