Sources have confirmed that Deondre Singleton has committed to Duke…
Singleton Taking it One Step at a Time
Deondre Singleton plans to be a traveling man the next few weeks. The FOX Sports NEXT three-star prospect visited University Park Dec 7-9, but two more visits on the horizon will make his recruiting picture clearer and lead him to a decision likely sometime before National Letter of Intent day Feb. 6. “I'm going to wait until after all of my visits to decide,” Singleton said. “I want to make sure where I end up is the place I feel I'm most comfortable and most happy at, and I think I'll know that after my visits.” Singleton, a defensive back from Archer High (Lawrenceville, Ga.) had been mostly in contact with now former Nittany Lion defensive coordinator Ted Roof. Roof's departure to Georgia Tech doesn't affect the high school senior's thoughts about the Nittany Lions, though, and that's because another member of Bill O'Brien's staff with Southern ties has been in contact with him from the start. “It does put some thoughts into my mind, because even though Coach O'Brien reaffirmed his commitment to Penn State, you hate to see coaches leave, and never know when others might,” Singleton said. “But [offensive line] Coach Mac McWhorter is the recruiting coach for my area, and he's been talking to me since my junior year. My visit there and conversations with him just continue to prove what a good guy he is.” The 5-foot-11, 170-pound prospect will visit make a pair of stops in North Carolina the next two weeks, trekking to Boone, N.C. and Appalachian State on Jan. 11, and returning to the Tar Heel State a weekend later on Jan. 18 to visit Duke. “App State was one of the first schools that came into the picture for me, and they started talking to me my sophomore year,” Singleton said. “I have a friend that goes there, and I've been talking to them for a while, and I know they like me.” As for Duke, Singleton has developed a relationship with Blue Devils head coach Dave Cutcliffe, who led his team to a 6-6 season before dropping the Belk Bowl to Cincinnati Dec. 27, 48-34. “Duke has shown more interest as of late, and they are a great school that can provide a great education,” Singleton said. “Coach Cutcliffe is a great coach, and I feel it's very worth taking a visit there.” That line of thinking is why he chose not to commit to the Nittany Lions on his official visit weekend, which saw the Nittany Lions reel in verbal pledges four other prospects. “That visit was nice, and I really felt the love while I was up there,” Singleton said. “The community really stood out to me. They really care about the football program, and I liked how the players really like and treat the coaches, and vice versa. But I wanted to wait and take these other two visits before making a decision.” On the field, Singleton rarely waits for anything, and his stat line proves it. His 47 tackles, 14 pass break-ups, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries during his senior season attest to that. “In my county, I'm known as a ball hawk. I go get the ball and make plays, and feel really good tracking the ball down and making something happen,” he said Singleton also feels he could play either cornerback or safety at the next level. “Most schools, including Penn State, have asked me which position I feel I could play or like best. But I'm letting them make that decision,” Singleton said. “I feel I'm best playing zone, because I'm able to bait the quarterback more in zone coverage, which is one of my strengths. I feel I might be a better safety than cornerback, but whatever my future coaches decide, that's where I'll play.” A future that will be determined in a few short weeks, and after a couple hundred miles are added to his travel log. “I'm not really sure yet how I want to decide, or when. But I want to be somewhere where I will be happy,” Singleton said. “I'm going to take my visits, and then I will make a decision.”
