Husker commit gets in home visit
River Ridge, Louisiana, John Curtis High School, defensive end Walker Ashburn hosted Nebraska defensive end coach John Papuchis last week. "Coach JP came to my house last Tuesday," Ashburn said. "He met my family, and discussed some academic things with them." Ashburn said that his family really didn't have any concerns with Nebraska, or the coaching staff, but Walker had some questions of his own. "I asked him where they wanted to play me at. and they said defensive end," Ashburn said. "I asked if they wanted to red shirt me, they said they didn't plan on it. He didn't promise me playing time, but he said there is a chance I could play. He named all the people in front of me, and I understand that those people paid their dues. I want to go in and compete day in and day out for playing time. I think if I play to the best of my ability I can see the field." As far as other schools go, Ashburn said he is only interested in one school. "I am fully committed to Nebraska, and have no plans on taking any other visits, but some other schools still call me." Ashburn said. "SMU, Oklahoma State, Stanford and Michigan still call every now and then. All of them know I am committed to Nebraska. They tell me they want to recruit me as hard as they can, and stick with me till the end of the recruiting process." The talented three-star defensive end said that he has not been in contact with any other recruits of the 2010 class, but talks to former River Ridge safety, and current Nebraska red shirt freshman P.J. Smith. "I talk to P.J. Smith, but he is already there (Nebraska)," Ashburn said. "Our school populations is like 300, so we hung out at school a lot. All the football players have a special bond here. He is the main guy at Nebraska that I talk to. He has been straight up with me. He told me those coaches will get me ready to play, and get me to the next level. I know coach JP and coach Bo will get me there for sure. Coach Bo is turning things around up there. He has only been there what two years? Look what he has done for that program, and that defense. I have only talked to coach Bo a couple times, but coach JP told me he was coming with him on his next visit." Ashburn seemed very excited for his chance to talk with Nebraska's head coach in the up coming weeks. "I don't like people that are fake so I hope he straight forward," Ashburn said. "I want the real deal. That's what P.J. says he is. He told me that he is not fake and will be straight up with me. I know there is a dead period coming up, so I am not sure when they are coming. " Ashburn and River Ridge went 15-1 this season, with the only loss coming in the state championship game. "It was a tough loss," Ashburn said. "I think the final was 18-13. I had two sacks and about 5 tackles in the game." This season Ashburn only played defensive end. "I think I had 18 sacks and 95 tackles," Ashburn said. "I never played a full game though. I usually got taken out after the first half if we were up a lot."
